General Lectures on Education and Research in Industrial Engineering

"Research in 3D Printing, Smart Manufacturing, and Education in Improving Undergraduate Innovation"

Padang (JTI, Unand) - On Saturday, October 17, 2020, the Department of Industrial Engineering, Universitas Andalas, held its 1st General Lectures on Education and Research in Industrial Engineering. The event was done through a video conference.

At the event, Assoc. Prof. Bingbing Li, Ph.D., a professor at California State University, Northridge (CSUN), C.A., USA, delivered his lecture on the innovations that he had been doing in education and research in Industrial Engineering. The title of his presentation was "Research in 3D Printing, Smart Manufacturing, and Education in Improving Undergraduate Innovation”. Feri Afrinaldi, Ph.D., Chair of the Department of Industrial Engineering at Universitas Andalas, moderated the talk. About 250 participants attended the lecture. They are the faculty and students from Universitas Andalas and its partner universities in Sumatra and Java.

For 3D printing, Professor Li talked about his research in developing porous titanium scaffolds for cell viability in bone tissue engineering, CAM plate for Harley Davidson M8 Engine, and skateboard topology optimization. The U.S. Department of Defense funded the first project, and the National Science Foundation, USA, supported the last two. For smart manufacturing, he shared his experience in the project of Smart Connected Worker Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. The research involved machine learning, motion capture, vision monitoring, and machine state to monitor manufacturing processes, including energy consumption. For the education side, he shared his experience in supervising his students completing their senior design projects. The senior design project is a unique course for engineering schools in the U.S. The subject requires students to have engineering design experiences. He also talked about his outreach activities, similar to community development activities. His activities include introducing and exposing high school students to engineering projects, especially 3D printing and smart manufacturing.

In the Q&A session, the students and faculty were very enthusiastic. The questions ranged from 3D printing technology, smart manufacturing, how the senior design project course is managed, and the opportunity to study in the U.S. In total, the talk lasted for more than 2 hours. As Dr. Feri mentioned, the event will open the student's and faculty's perspectives. They were exposed to relatively new technology in Indonesia, 3D printing, and smart manufacturing.

Padang (JTI, Unand) - Setelah Program Studi S1 Teknik Industri Universitas Andalas memperoleh status akreditasi internasional ABET berdasarkan hasil keputusan The Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) dari ABET melalui surat resmi yang diterima oleh Dekan Fakultas Teknik Universitas Andalas pada tanggal 24 Agustus 2020, status Akreditasi Internasional ABET Program Studi S1 Teknik Industri yang mulai berlaku sejak 1 Oktober 2018 sudah bisa diakses pada website ABET pada link; https://amspub.abet.org/aps/name-search?searchType=institution&keyword=andalas
